How we work

Editorial
policy.

Last updated

Newstrends is an AI-assisted South African newsroom. This policy sets out how we produce content and the standards we hold it to. We are deliberately transparent: every article carries a reporting record explaining how it was produced.

01

What we cover, and why

We cover what South Africa is talking about—viral stories, sport, finance, business, technology, and public-interest topics such as grants and government opportunities. Our aim is not to be first, but to explain what is happening and why it is trending, with the context a reader needs to understand the moment.

02

How trends are detected

Our pipeline ranks topics by how strongly they surface across multiple independent public signals—syndicated news feeds, search and social trend data, and reputable data sources—rather than relying on any single outlet. A topic has to show genuine, cross-source momentum before we write about it.

03

How articles are produced

Articles are generated by automated systems from a frozen evidence record for the trend. Depending on the article, a separate model may review the draft against that same evidence before publication. This is disclosed on each article: we do not present model review as independent human verification.

04

Quality and safety gates

Before an article publishes, it must pass deterministic checks for readability, editorial quality, and factual reliability, and clear a content-safety and policy screen. Drafts that fail these gates are not published. The confidence and reliability estimates shown on articles are automated signals, not guarantees, and we label them as such.

05

Sourcing and transparency

Where a public source URL was part of an article's evidence record, we link to it in the reporting record so readers can go to the primary material. Where no public source URL is retained, we say so plainly rather than implying verification that did not happen.

06

Dates and updates

Each article shows when it was first published and whether a later material update was recorded. We do not refresh “last updated” dates artificially; an update date reflects a real change to the article.

07

Corrections

We fix errors. If you spot one, email the article link and the problem to editorial@newstrends.co.za or use the “Request a correction” link on the article. We prioritise accuracy fixes, and material corrections are reflected in the article's update record.

08

Advertising independence

Advertising never influences whether or how we cover a topic. Ads are served by third parties, clearly separated from editorial content, and never presented as our reporting. See our privacy policy for detail.

09

What we do not do

We do not fabricate quotes, sources, experts, or statistics; we do not impersonate real people; and we do not publish content designed only to attract search traffic. When our systems cannot support a claim from the evidence record, the article does not make it.
